Admittedly, I am not a poet. But, I have written these, and I don't know what else to do with them. So, here you go.

Pride

            Pride.

Pride is a flag bathed in a single spotlight

Waving in the ice-wind over a Wal-Mart parking lot.

            Someone else hung it there

                                    Not me

                        Someone else

Pride is like getting fall down, piss your pants,

Crack your teeth on the pavement,

Wake up with dried blood on your pillow,

                                    Drunk

Like drinking because you hate yourself

even though you don’t know why

            What you are

                        What I am

            What we all are

                                    What are we?

Stories.

                        Pride.

            Pride is a word.

                        And not much else.

The ones who don’t

I saw a man make fire over coals

            To stave off the night

            that wouldn’t make amends

            For those who didn’t know

            I saw a woman smile

            When others frowned

            I think about her often

When it all stops seeming worthwhile

            I saw an old man

Climb a mountain because he could

When he came back down, he smiled and said

we have to do what we can

It seems like whenever everyone gets cruel

All I remember are the ones who don’t.
